Harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) is developmentally inappropriate sexual behaviour displayed by children and young people which is harmful or abusive.
Problematic sexual behaviour (PSB) is developmentally inappropriate or socially unexpected sexualised behaviour which doesn’t have an overt element of victimisation or abuse. (NSPCC 2022)
In 2021 OFSTED published its Review into Sexual Abuse in Schools and Colleges, raising significant concerns about the experiences of sexual harassment and sexualised behaviour, language and content amongst children and young people. Since then, research from key sources like The Children’s Commissioner (2022) and reports across a broad range of the media have further emphasised the need to prioritise this key issue.
The Equilibrium Project was developed by Online Behaviours Ltd in collaboration with experienced Behaviour and Wellbeing Consultants to partner with schools and organisations working with children and young people in addressing the issues of sexualised behaviour, language and content. The project focuses on a bespoke approach incorporating a number of phases to help deliver a comprehensive, in-depth service. It operates in 3 phases:
Phase 1: Quantitative and qualitative research
Our team of experienced researchers collate and analyse data from surveys and focus groups to develop a clear picture of the specific experiences and issues within your setting.
Phase 2: Training and Organisational Support
Using feedback from the research an action plan can be developed. This may include curriculum development and reviews, staff training and support, policy and procedural support.
Phases 3: Interventions
In some cases key areas of need can be identified amongst smaller cohorts of young people and children. Our intervention sessions are designed to focus on providing support in areas such as:
Misogynism & gender stereotyping
Pornography & sexualised content
Understanding healthy relationships
Our entry package includes phases 1 & 2, which includes:
Pupil and Staff Online Survey - including analysis and bespoke feedback report.
Focus group research (two groups, male and female) – including two focus group sessions completed by an experienced researcher, analysis and bespoke feedback report.
Staff and Governor training – incorporating research feedback, key updates around areas of risk and concern, scenario-based training on dealing with issues of sexualised behaviours, language or content.
Strategic support session – including support with policies and procedures, curriculum reviews and development, action planning or further support.
